New Callings
Those Who Find Their True Destinies!!
Those Who Fulfill God’s Good Plans For Their Lives Here and Now!
Jesus looked at him and said, You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas (which, when translated is Peter). John 1: 42
Jesus is showing us what happens when we become His follower.
We get a new name.
God does this throughout the whole Bible.
When God was calling people into their new purposes, the fulness of their destinies, He gave them new names.
Abram became Abraham.
His name now meaning Father.
For God was going to bring nations from His line, along with the Messiah for the world.
Jacob became Israel.
For Jacob’s 12 children became the nation of Israel, the people called to lead the world to the One True God.
Simon’s name meant, He has heard.
For Simon was one of the first followers of Jesus Christ, hearing what His brother and John the Baptist said about Jesus.
Then Jesus renames Him, Cephas, meaning stone, strength reliability.
For Cephas Peter was going to be one of the head leaders of the Apostles that were commissioned to go spread the good news of Jesus Christ around the world.
And it was also preparation for his failing, the night of Jesus’s trial.
For all people that were to come after Peter, to know where the power to embody our new name, our new callings comes from.
That He, Peter, and all people, would know that Peter’s strength, wasn’t based in humanness, human abilities or human goodness but simply in Jesus’s Holy Spirit empowering him.
His calling, this new name, this new purpose, could only be fulfilled resting in, filled with Jesus’s Spirit.
Now Peter received His new name before the Holy Spirit was given on mass.
But when the Holy Spirit was given on Pentecost, Peter was empowered to fulfill all His calling, all His commission until He went to be with Jesus again, face to face.
But those of us who believe here and now, we receive the Holy Spirit, God’s Spirit to come live in us and with us, when we obey and believe that Jesus is Lord, calling on His name.
And then He gives us our new name, His, Holy, Set Apart, Beloved, Chosen, Redeemed, Made New, Forgiven, Brother, Sister, Mother, Child, Friend, Family.
And each of these titles come with a new purpose, a greater calling, a destiny where we get to lead others to get their new names too.
May we know that we know that we know Jesus longs to give all people their new name, that they belong to Him and His Kingdom of Life For All Time.
