He asked them, Whose image is this and whose inscription? Caesar’s, They replied. Then He said to them, Give to Caesar’s what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. Matthew 22: 21

When I first read this, I thought the “wow” part was that Jesus was able to combat the people trying to trick Him.
And I imagine that is what wowed the people at the time.
For Jesus was a King, the rightful King of the world.
And they didn’t think He would submit to the Romans laws but instead overthrow them.

They thought they had trapped Jesus because the Romans were in governmental control.
Then they could have reported Jesus to the Romans and have Him removed, imprisoned or even killed for disobeying the law.

But instead He showed them His real mission, His real vision.
That He was about a much bigger higher calling than they could see.
That money, gold, what the world system cared about was not big enough.
This gold coin bore the image the earthly king, Caesar.
But in telling these men to give God what is Gods, He is telling them that He is seeking people, the hearts and souls of all mankind.
For people are made in the image of God, declared to us in Genesis 1.

That the gold in their hand ultimately belonged to Caesar or a human government.
But that people, humankind, are to be given back to God, Human hearts and their Spirits, what the devil stole through leading people into disobedience in Eden.
That people are what make up Jesus’s Kingdom.
That Jesus His ministry had not come for earthly treasures but for His people.

That like Moses by God’s order prepared the world to see Jesus by the Exodus, telling Pharaoh to let His people go, Jesus came to make the devil, let His people go, all of humanity, mankind, giving God back His people.

For Jesus was showing us the way to the Father, salvation, life through Jesus alone, which gives us the Holy Spirit.

May we know that we know that we know Jesus came to seek and save the lost, humankind, the image bearers of God, buying us back from the fallenness of the sin at Eden.

May we know that we know that we know each one of us were born to belong to the Real Father, our only Father, God in Heaven who sent Jesus to die for us, to live for us, and to give us His Spirit of life inside us, so that we are back with Him, in our real Home, in our eternal family forever.
